I designed and stitched Blue Poppies while completing my Master Craftsman in Crewel Embroidery for the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. This particular step was not only about stitching ability but it was also a design challenge. Certain geometric shapes of a minimum size were required in the design. It needed to incorporate an analogous color scheme. Only one stitch was allowed, but you had to have multiple variations on that stitch. The initial read through of these parameters only brought forward
I finally found my inspiration when thinking of a friend’s house that was decorated in the Arts and Crafts style. I have always liked the McIntosh rose. This was the seed that led to my own poppies and led me out of my disgruntled state. I chose the chain stitch for this piece as it has wonderful variations that are great for outlines and fills. My final design incorporated 6 variations of the chain stitch:
- Heavy Chain
- Raised Chain Band
- Detached Chain
- Woven Chain (2 passes)
- Laced Chain (a Pekinese stitch with a chain base)
- Woven Chain
Once the basic design was set, I really enjoyed this project. I found it fun to be pushed a bit by the design challenges specified. I am proud of the final result and I hope that you enjoy it as well.
